Designing for Dunes West Golf Club requires an understanding of scale. The property is vast, characterized by the wide Wando River marshes and the towering presence of live oaks. Flowers here cannot be an afterthought; they must be intentional and structural to avoid being swallowed by the landscape.

We know this venue well from our work here, and the most successful designs are those that embrace the Lowcountry aesthetic while providing enough visual weight to stand up to the open sky and historic stone architecture.

The Spaces

Outdoor Ceremony Space

This area is defined by a striking stone facade with arched openings and a classic brick pathway. It is a formal, structured space set against a natural backdrop.

  • What works: Large-scale floral arches that frame the existing stone openings. Ground-level meadows lining the brick pathway help define the aisle in such an open setting.
  • Skip: Small, spindly pedestals. They will look lost against the massive stone wall.
  • Watch out: Wind exposure. All structures must be heavily weighted as there are no rigging points or windbreaks.
  • Budget hero move: Create two large, lush ground-level “nests” at the foot of the stone arches. These can be moved to the indoor reception to flank the sweetheart table or the bandstand.

Main Dining Area

The indoor reception space is airy, featuring high ceilings and windows that offer panoramic views of the golf course and Wagner Creek.

  • What works: Utilizing the floor-to-ceiling windows. Low, lush compote arrangements allow guests to see the view, while tall, airy installations can bridge the gap between the tables and the high ceilings.
  • Skip: Overly dark or moody palettes that fight with the bright, natural light flooding the room.
  • Watch out: Table dimensions. Ensure centerpieces are scaled to the round tables typically used in this space to allow for full place settings and wine service.

Golf Course & Live Oaks

For ceremonies or cocktail hours held under the oaks, the design must feel organic.

  • What works: Asymmetrical floral “growing” installations at the base of the trees. This mimics the natural flora of the Lowcountry.
  • Skip: Highly geometric or modern structures that feel out of place in a 300-year-old landscape.
  • Watch out: The sun. Flowers in this area are fully exposed. Avoid delicate blooms like hydrangeas unless they are in a heavy water source.

What Works at Dunes West Golf Club

  • Architectural Framing: The stone arches are the venue’s best feature. Use them. Floral installations that follow the curve of the stone look integrated and high-end.
  • Lowcountry Palettes: Whites, greens, and soft blues or peaches mirror the marshland and river. These colors feel “at home” here.
  • Heavy Mechanics: This is a high-wind environment. Every arch, pedestal, and meadow must be anchored with significant weight.
  • Textural Contrast: Use the Spanish moss to your advantage. Incorporate textural elements like dried palmetto or pampas to bridge the gap between formal florals and the rugged landscape.
  • Ground-Up Design: Since hanging installations are not possible in the outdoor spaces, focus your budget on the ground. Aisle meadows and “nest” arrangements provide the most photographic impact.

Budget Guide

TierInvestmentFloral Strategy
Essentials$1,750 - $3,500Focus on personals and a high-impact ceremony focal point. Minimalist bud vases for reception tables.
Sweet Spot$3,500 - $6,000Full ceremony coverage with a broken arch or stone-frame installation. Lush, low centerpieces for all reception tables.
Full Experience$6,000 - $10,000Aisle meadows, a massive ceremony installation, and a mix of tall and low centerpieces. Floral accents for the bar and lounge.
Statement$10,000+Full-scale transformation. Heavy floral coverage on the stone arches, lush staircase greenery, and elevated “trees” on reception tables.

The character of Dunes West is rooted in its history and its horizon. Your floral budget should prioritize the spaces where you spend the most time, but never underestimate the power of a single, massive statement piece in the ceremony site.

Tips

  • No rigging points: All verticality must be achieved through self-supporting ground structures; do not plan for hanging installations.
  • Repurpose with intent: Ceremony ground meadows are the easiest items to move into the clubhouse for the reception.
  • Mind the heat: If your ceremony is poolside or on the golf course in summer, choose hardy tropicals or roses over delicate field flowers.
  • Define the aisle: In the absence of walls, use floral markers to guide guest movement and create a clear path for the processional.
  • Approval is key: Ensure any large-scale installations are cleared with management, especially regarding the “no open flame” policy for decor.
