It's been a wild few years for weddings.
As the industry evolves, so do couples' choices in flowers, dresses, colors, food and more.
Through Poppy's experience designing, delivering, and installing flowers for thousands of weddings in 2022 and planning for even more in 2023, we have an inside look at what's trending in weddings.
Rebecca, Poppy's Senior Manager of Merchandising, foresees this year's six biggest wedding microtrends like handwritten cocktail menus, elaborately embroidered veils, and “wild ass cakes,” as well as more candid photography.
So, let's dive into the exciting world of wedding trends for 2023.
We've seen it everywhere, from Pinterest to mustard candles and canyon-colored bridesmaid dresses to toffee roses and chocolate ranunculus, rust — in all its variations — maintains its stronghold as a trusty wedding neutral, from flowers to decor.
The perennial Millennial ethos of minimalism continues to evolve and fragment. “We're seeing monobloom bouquets and modernist venues," says Rebecca. "It's about honoring things in their natural state."
Whether in the desert oasis itself or back home in Oklahoma, couples are trending toward the carefree, unapologetic stance of a Vegas wedding — eloping, underdressing, photoboothing. It’s so very fun.
From stately piazzas, lace veils and olive groves to House of Gucci mafiosa luxe, our obsession with modern Italian aesthetic has taken off faster than Jennifer Coolidge on a Sicilian yacht. This trend, marked by elaborate fruit tablescapes, cannoli, pizza, spills, and fun, has us singing “That’s amore.”
It’s a Dorothy Draper heyday with highly saturated textures, layered patterning, chinoiserie, muraled venues, huge bouquets, retro cakes, bowls of maraschino cherries, and aerialists dangling from the ceiling.
We’re seeing more documentary-style photography — high flash, Polaroids, disposables, and film. It’s more off-the-cuff, in-the-moment, come-as-you-are kind of vibes. Hire a photographer, or give cameras to the kids.
