Designing for the Brazilian Room requires a balance between the venue’s heavy historic interior and the airy vastness of the Berkeley Hills. This is not a venue for timid, small-scale arrangements; the dark Brazilian hardwoods and the towering redwoods outside demand floral designs with enough visual weight to hold their own. We know this venue intimately and focus our strategy on high-contrast palettes that pop against the 1939-era paneling.

The primary design challenge here is the transition from the bright, open-air patio to the moody, atmospheric Great Room. To create a cohesive experience, we recommend using the surrounding Tilden Park greenery as a textural baseline, then layering in blooms that reflect the season—richer tones for the interior hearth and lighter, more ethereal textures for the wind-prone patio.

The Spaces

Flagstone Patio

The patio is a dramatic stage framed by the forest. It is beautiful but exposed, meaning wind and scale are your two biggest considerations.

  • What works: Ground-based “meadow” installations. Because there are no overhead rigging points, building “up” from the flagstone creates a modern, organic look that anchors the ceremony without competing with the tree line.
  • Skip: Tall, top-heavy pedestals or thin, spindly arches. The Berkeley Hills can be breezy, and lightweight structures are a liability on the uneven flagstone.
  • Watch out: The scale of the forest is massive. A standard-sized arch can often look miniature against the backdrop of Tilden Park. Increase the volume of greenery to ensure the ceremony site feels intentional.
  • Budget hero move: Focus your ceremony budget on two large, high-impact floor pieces at the altar. These can be moved indoors after the ceremony to flank the fireplace or the sweetheart table.

Brazilian Room (Main Indoor Space)

The interior is defined by its vaulted ceilings and rich, dark wood paneling donated by the Brazilian government in 1941. It is elegant but can feel dark if the floral palette is too muddy.

  • What works: High-contrast color palettes. Whites, soft blushes, or vibrant oranges and burgundies stand out beautifully against the Jacaranda and Mahogany walls.
  • Skip: Dark greenery-heavy garlands without floral accents. All-greenery designs tend to blend into the dark wood and lose their impact in photos.
  • Watch out: Lighting. The dimmable ceiling lights change the way flower colors appear. Warm-toned blooms (corals, yellows, deep reds) thrive under the venue’s incandescent glow.
  • Budget hero move: The fireplace mantel. A lush, asymmetrical installation here serves as a focal point for the entire evening and provides the best backdrop for indoor photos.

What Works at Brazilian Room

Jewel tones and high-contrast whites. The historic wood paneling is a dominant feature. To make flowers visible, lean into “bright and airy” or “deep and moody” with high-saturation colors.

Mantel-centric design. The fireplace is the architectural heart of the room. Investing in a statement piece here provides more visual value than scattered small arrangements throughout the space.

Organic, garden-style textures. Given the Tilden Park location, arrangements that look “plucked from the hillside” feel more appropriate than tight, formal spheres.

Weighted outdoor installations. The patio is subject to mountain breezes. All floral structures must be heavily weighted or designed low to the ground to ensure stability throughout the ceremony.

Repurposing for the “flip.” Since the patio and main room are adjacent, moving large ceremony pieces to the fireplace or cake table is a seamless way to maximize a mid-range budget.

Budget Guide

TierInvestmentFloral Strategy
Essentials$1,750 - $2,800Personal flowers plus a curated set of bud vases for reception tables and a modest mantel accent.
Sweet Spot$3,000 - $4,500Includes a statement ceremony installation (like floor meadows) that repurposes to the fireplace, plus lush low centerpieces.
Full Experience$5,000 - $7,500Full ceremony arch or large-scale meadows, a heavy mantel installation, and premium floral-forward centerpieces for all 150 guests.
Statement$8,000+Full room transformation including installations on the exposed beams, entrance floral moments, and high-density premium blooms throughout.

The character of the Brazilian Room is one of “refined wilderness,” so your budget should prioritize a few large, architectural statements over many small, disconnected pieces.

Tips

Plan for the newt migration. From November 1 to April 1, South Park Drive closes for the California newt migration. Ensure your floral team knows to use the Golf Course Drive detour to avoid being late for load-in.

Load-in logistics. The parking lot is a short walk from the venue. We account for extra time to transport large installations from the van to the patio to ensure everything is set before guests arrive.

Embrace the fireplace. Even if you aren’t lighting a fire, the hearth is the best indoor photo op. Treat it as your secondary ceremony site for the best “bang for your buck.”

Temperature control. The room has climate control, but the patio can get hot in the afternoon sun. Choose hardy blooms like roses, ranunculus, or tropicals for the outdoor portion of the day.

Caterer coordination. Access to the building is strictly tied to your caterer’s arrival. We coordinate directly with your approved catering team to ensure our floral setup window aligns with their building access.
